Beyond the Digital Print, 2001
Denver, CO

The Digital Atelier® held a workshop at the Rocky Mountain Digital Arts Center in May, 2001.

"Beyond the Digital Print" was a 3-day hands-on workshop focusing on combining digital and traditional media in medium and large format prints. It was designed for artists of all skill levels who wanted to explore new ways of making prints from their digital files. The emphasis was on printmaking.

The workshop included:

•selecting from commercially available precoated papers, canvas and other products
•printing on backlit, translucent and transparent materials for illuminated images
•making custom substrates on which to print or transfer (including fresco and other textured surfaces)
•using the digital print as a ground for traditional media such as encaustic, paint and collage
•making hand-pulled monotypes from digital transfers
•producing "digital skins", an emulsion-type transfer for rough and irregular surface
•using precoats and postcoats
•demonstration of digital imaging to textiles using the Mutoh Falcon

Each of the processes was introduced and assisted. In addition to the class sessions, there were open lab-times with Macintosh computers available to work on images and instructors consulting one-on-one.

Participants had time to complete
several prints using a variety of processes. Output was on Epson 7500 inkjet printers.
