ARTIST'S
STATEMENT
Growing
up
in
a
rural
area
provided
ample
opportunity
to
develop
a
close
relationship
with
nature
at
a
very
young
age.
Choosing
to
spend
many
hours,
even
as
a
preschooler,
wandering
the
woods
and
fields
of
my
home
I
found
joy,
refuge
and
comfort
in
special
places
that
were
as
intimately
mine
as
my
own
room.
As
an
adult
living
an
urban
life
far
from
my
midwestern
rural
roots,
I
still
steal
away
to
the
wonderful
natural
environment
of
my
adopted
home.
And
now
my
art
provides
me
with
a
means
to
capture
the
essence
of
the
environments
I
encounter
and
to share
the
core
of
these
experiences.
I
am
especially
interested
in
the
beauty
to
be
found
in
the
humblest
of
forms.
While
mountains,
animals
and
redwoods
can
be
found
in
my
work,
more
modest
elements
such
as
leaves,
insects,
and
rocks
play
an
equally
substantial
role.
I
combine
these
elements
to
reflect
my
impression
of
a
place,
form,
or
time,
transforming
them
into
archetypes
for
nature
as
experienced
by
humans.
The
compacted
space
and
time
of
these
works
produce
a
crystallization
of
experience,
resulting
in
work
that
is
simultaneously
identifiable
and
abstract.
The
attraction
of
nature
is
enhanced
by
the
surprising
intricacy
of
even
the
simplest
of
structures.
Using
mixed
media
I
employ
layers
of
imagery
in
my
prints,
chine
colle,
paint,
etc.
to
better
replicate
the
layered
complexity
of
the
natural
world.
Thus
the
viewer's
contemplation
is
rewarded
(as
in
experiencing
nature)
by
ongoing
revelation
of
form
and
complexity.
Those
who
view
my
art
must
travel
inward
to
consider
their
own
relationship
with
the
natural
world.
As
viewers
bring
their
own
experiences
into
the
interpretation
of
the
work,
spaces
and
places
therein
become
familiar
to
them.
